DID YOU KNOW?…. by hiring us to do your roof; you will also help to break the cycle of homelessness in Calgary? This is because, in the early part of 2007, with business going so well, the directors of Fortress Roofing Ltd. decided to partner with The Mustard Seed Street Ministry by raising funds for new affordable housing units to be built in Calgary’s inner city.
From May 1 to December 31, 2007, Fortress Roofing donated $13,657.00 to The SEED through ‘A Roof Overhead’!
In 2008, Fortress Roofing Ltd. has decided to continue with this program by donating $0.50 to The SEED for every bundle of shingles that we install on Calgary roofs – at no extra cost to our customers. The money donated will go toward The SEED’s planned development of an affordable housing building in Calgary. Also, as Fortress Roofing Ltd. has agreed to cover any administration costs associated with the project, 100% of funds raised will go directly to The SEED.
Why are we doing this? ….because everybody needs a roof!
The central core of Calgary will lose over 300 units of affordable housing in the next few years. In 2007 alone, the number of people needing a place to sleep will grow at a rate six times the rate of Calgary’s population growth. Of those forced to seek emergency or transition housing, more than 50% already have a job, yet are unable to afford their own place. This issue is worthy of our attention and support!
In March 2007, the Seed announced plans to develop a 28-story apartment tower in the heart of Calgary. Planned to open in 2010 on 10th Ave. and Centre St. SE, the Seed’s Affordable Housing Project incorporates 356 deep-subsidy affordable studio apartments for single adults; 64 one and two-bedroom units rented at or near market value; one floor of retail space; and three floors of program and administration space. Residents in the non-market accommodations would pay rent at a level not to exceed 30 per cent of their income.
This Project is not a homeless shelter. It is intended to provide a safe, affordable, stable foundation on which residents can rely as they strive to overcome their circumstances. It will be situated close to city resources, such as transit and health care, with easy access to other services, such as counseling, for those who require them. Once completed, this project will change the lives of thousands of individuals for the better.
The Goal of ‘A Roof Overhead’
In 2007, Fortress Roofing set a goal of $15,000 to be donated towards this amazing housing project. We came very close to meeting this goal by raising $13,657.00. For 2008, we have increased this goal to $35,000. While it may only be a small part of the big picture, it will make a profound impact as other Calgarian’s also rise to the challenge to help make this project a reality.
